This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jimmy Wright of New York City has been primarily a pastel painter but also works in litho crayon, and in the early 2000s, began drawing with black litho crayon on phone book pages.  In the 1990s, he lost several friends to AIDS, and as a result began a series whereby he made a floral drawing on the phone-book page that listed the name and phone number of the deceased.  In the process, he discovered the ease with which the crayon moved across the page, which has a slightly different texture than newsprint.

Wright credits the idea of drawing on phone book pages to Franz Kline, who kept them in his studio for cleaning brushes and as cheap drawing paper, and to Willem de Kooning who used phone-book pages to dry his paints.  However, for these artists their motive was financial rather than aesthetic.

Jimmy Wright was born July 8, 1944 and is a native of Kentucky.  He received a BFA with Honors from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967 and earned an MFA from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1971.
