This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography is from James S Hamilton, Jr. , a researcher of New Jersey artists:

August Will (his full name was John M. August Will, but he signed his paintings and was always known as August Will) was born in Weimar, Germany in 1834. Nothing is known of his early arts education, if any, or his other schooling in Germany.  It is known that Will was in the United States at least by 1855 (at the age of 21) since there is a pen and ink drawing of the New York City Post Office done by him in that year.

Apparently, shortly after his arrival in the United States, Will established his residence in Jersey City and was to live there for the rest of his life.  He was well known as an artist in and around Jersey City, and the Jersey City Museum is well stocked with Will paintings. A Will pencil drawing done in 1859 is part of the collection of the Newark (NJ) museum and was given to the Museum in 1957, the year in which the Will drawing was part of the "Early New Jersey Artists" exhibit.

Will, as an illustrator, did many drawings for the Century Company in New York City which produced Century Magazine and the children's magazine St. Nicholas. He was a close personal friend to both Alexander Wilson Drake who was arts editor for the magazines and George Howes Whittle who was associate arts editor (both of whom were also New Jersey artists).  Each year around the turn of the century, Will would send both of these gentlemen small paintings he had done as Christmas greetings.

Aside from his illustration work, Will did portraits in crayon, some design work and taught art students at his Jersey City studio. As a landscape painter, he traveled around New Jersey particularly the Raritan Bay area painting scenes he enjoyed which included both landscapes and marines.

John M. August Will died January 23, 1910 at his home in Jersey City.
