| Joseph I. Whittle was born in London, England in 1825. Whittle was in Connecticut and Massachusetts during the 1850s. By the 1860s he was active in San Francisco as a scene painter for the Tivoli Opera House. Locally, he painted views of the Cliff House and the bay. One of his sketches of San Diego Bay is dated 1869. He studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in 1898-99. He later moved to Hawaii, married an Hawaiian girl, and was active there until the 1920s.
