Of Norwegian-American and Native American descent, artist Kathy Whitman received her Indian name, "Elk Woman" at a ceremony on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. The naming gave her an identity that helped her focus on her career and art.
She is a graduate of Central High School in Dickinson, North Dakota and attended Standing Rock Community College in Fort Yates, North Dakota, and the University of South Dakota from 1973 to 1978.
