Biography from AskART:
| The following is from Adam Williams:
Marvin Wise was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. He began creating artwork at age four. His main influences are the surrealists, but he maintains that his work is not about dreams but visionary creations of an allegorical nature and are an immediate response to social events in the world, or events in his immediate family.
Marvin travelled for some time and had shows in Europe in the early 80's. He sometimes travels to New York City and has been showing work in North Florida for the past nine years. He continues to create and exhibit his work.
Of his association with the artist, Adam Williams writes:
"I first met Marvin Wise at a show we both had with Marcia Glaziere, and a few other artists in the area who all seemed to have very similar interests in art and where art was going. My eyes went directly to Marvins' large canvases. The artwork seemed so vivid, original and organic that I told the director I wanted to meet this artist. Three years later I have found a true friend in Marvin Wise, who is one of the most positive people I have come to know in the area. He totally is a person who destroys any stereotype of what a black man in the South is, and his art transcends political, or social boundaries without loosing Truth. His work is both sincere and natural.
There is no one that can combine both primitive and academic art so profoundly or prolifically. He's an artist who won't repeat himself. I personally feel that Marvin Wise's work is the best in North America right now. His work is like a fire that burns the soul and reaches to the highest level of the senses. He has helped me with my artwork as well as many professors in his College with his keen eye and sense. I'm proud to know him. I Wish him the best in what he's earned. |
