This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Mary Hubbard Whitwall was born in Massachusetts in May 1847. Mary Hubbard was from a prominent Boston family. Many of her ancestors were painted by John Singleton Copley. She studied in Paris at Académie Julian under Robert-Fleury and Bouguereau before her marriage to William S. Whitwall.
The marriage was short-lived. She was in San Francisco in 1887-88 but by 1900 she was back in Boston and had a portrait studio. Her rare still lifes appear to have been influenced by Vincent Van Gogh.
