This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born and raised in Emporia, Kansas, Mary Joan Waid paints sumptuous still lifes, often in pastels, and also does self portraits.

She earned a BFA from Wichita State University but did not study pastel painting there. After graduation, she moved to New York City, and worked at the Andre Emmerich Gallery.   Raising a family in the 1970s, she painted mostly domestic subjects and flowers.  Tiring of this routine, she searched for something new, which was provided in 1979, when she had a fellowship at Yaddo, the artists' retreat in Saratoga Springs, New York.  There she did a close-up drawing of herself, and seeing her face close up became the beginning of her focus on portraiture and figure subjects.  She said that because she often had to work nights and weekends, "she turned to a model that was readily available---herself."

With her floral subjects, she works directly from life rather than photographs, which means that her subject changes while she is painting.  She is fascinated by this process that she calls "discovery".

Committed to the flow of energy, she practices Tai Chi, "meditation in motion", which she reflects in her painting processes.

Maureen Bloomfield, "Mary Joan Waid", The Pastel Journal, October 2005, pp. 49-53
