Born and raised in Emporia, Kansas, Mary Joan Waid paints sumptuous still lifes, often in pastels, and also does self portraits.
She earned a BFA from Wichita State University but did not study pastel
painting there. After graduation, she moved to New York City, and
worked at the Andre Emmerich Gallery. Raising a family in the
1970s, she painted mostly domestic subjects and flowers. Tiring
of this routine, she searched for something new, which was provided in
