Born in Red Oak, Iowa, Nellie Walker became a sculptor of statues and monuments. Her interest in carving came from her childhood when she often watched her stone-cutter father carve letters and other decorative features on tombstones.  At the age of 16 years she tried her hand at carving by sculpting a bust of Abraham Lincoln, which was exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

In 1900, Walker moved to Chicago to study at the Art Institute.  She became an apprentic (showing 500 of 1531 characters).
