This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Nelson D. Wilson    (1880-1950)

A well known local artist and decorator, and also dubbed the dean of Southern Indiana artists,  Nelson D. Wilson studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago.  He later did private work with well known painters in California and with C. Curry Bohm at his Brown County Studio.

He began exhibiting his work in 1922 at the John Herron Art Institute.  For a number of years he exhibited at the Hoosier Salon in Chicago and in Indianapolis.

His idea of painting nature was to "paint it as it is and to seriously try to catch it as it looks."  He paints right on the spot as he believes he gets better values of color and shading.

He died at his home in Evansville, Indiana, in early May of 1950 after suffering a heart attack.

Biography excerpted from his obituary, dated May 8, 1950

Submitted by Edward P. Bentley, researcher of Lansing, Michigan

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Nelson Wilson (1880-1950) was born in Leopold, Indiana.  Later, he lived at 511 Adams in Evansville.

Although he aspired to be an artist, he was forced by the Great Depression to make his living as a sign painter, because nobody had any money to buy paintings.  He did murals in the Evansville Coliseum and on the stairwell of the old Dr. Yeck mansion.  In the 1920's he painted a stage curtain for McCutchanville school.  He also painted stage scenery for Central High School. His Capture of Isaac Knight is in the Evansville Museum.  Wilson often painted in the McCutchanville area where his brother lived.
