This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Nina V. Waldeck      (1868-1943)

An influential painter, illustrator, etcher, teacher, and critic, Nina V. Waldeck was born in Cleveland (Cuyahoga), Ohio on January 26, 1868. The daughter of Charles Waldeck, a wire mill employee, she attended the Cleveland School of Art where she graduated with the class of 1888.

After study in New York with Max Bohm and William Merritt Chase, she returned to the Cleveland School of Art in 1891 as teacher of watercolor and elementary drawing from the antique.  (She has also been noted as having studied further in Paris as the Academy Julian and later at the Art Students League in New York.)

The following year, 1892, she was put in charge of some of the women’s life classes, as well as anatomy and pen-and-ink drawing.  In 1898 she was an early and extremely influential instructor to a young Marsden Hartley. Except for leaves of absence in 1895 and 1900 (likely when she was in Paris,) she continued at her post until about 1919.

Nina V. Waldeck was a member of the Cleveland Art Club, the Bohemian Club, and the Brush and Palette Club; in addition, she was a co-founder in 1912, of the Women’s Art Club of Cleveland.
