| The least known of the artists in the Wiles family of prominent New York artists, Rachel Wiles was married to Lemuel Wiles (1826-1905), and met her husband in a painting class taught by William Hart in Albany, New York. They married in 1854, and their son, Irving Wiles, was born in 1861. Later the son painted a portrait of his parents that now belongs to the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
As a young girl from Albany in 1849, under the name of A Rachel Ramsey, she exhibited a volume of paintings of floral subjects at the American Institute of the City of New York. She listed her age as 17, which is the only apparent clue to 1832 as her birth date.
Her career was primarily on hold while she raised her only child, but in 1880, she exhibited a painting, "Sheep", at the National Academy of Design and used the name Mrs. L.M. Wiles. In 1881, she exhibited a watercolor at the Brooklyn Art Association, and the subject was San Luis Rey, California, indicating that she and her husband had been traveling in that state. (Lemuel Wiles also exhibited a painting of the same subject.)
She died in New York City on December 17, 1896. The Perry Public Library in Perry New York has a number of paintings of Lemuel Wiles and a collection of the family papers.
