Artist Statement:
The first gallery to handle my work was Jane Hyatt’s Village Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.  She was an eminent dealer in the famed Taos School of artists in the early nineteen hundreds and, fortunately, was still there to be a great encouragement to me.  Early in my career, Dean Krakel, founder and director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, took an interest in my work and collected several of my major pieces.  That began the establishment of contacts which have been very helpful to me over the years.

I have been fortunate to have exhibited and studied with a few of the finest artists of the past century.  They were largely contemporaries of Normal Rockwell.  Many studied under the same teachers as he did, and were responsible for the “Golden Age of American Illustration” which began in the mid 1800’s and ended approximately in the late 1960’s, when postage rates forced magazines to turn from expensive fine art to photography.  Some of us benefited as those gifted illustrators turned to the growing western art market. We found ourselves in art shows with them, and they were kind and generous with their knowledge.  They are all gone, now; Tom Lovell, Robert Lougheed, John Clymer, Harold Von Schmidt and so many others.  But, we were able to learn the basics from them that are so necessary for the aspiring artist.

The skill to paint is a gift, and I look forward to using my remaining years in offering to Him the ability He has given me.
