This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in London, England in 1769 as the elder son of Neo-Classical painter Benjamin West, (1733-1820), and his wife, Elizabeth Shewell, (1737-1817), Raphael was a student of his father and became a painter in classical style of aristocratic genre, figure, portrait and religious subjects. He was also a lithographer.
He spent most of his life in England and was an intimate friend of artist William Dunlap, while the latter was studying in London.
Raphael West was well known for his painting of Orlando rescuing his brother from the lioness in Shakespeare's play, As You Like It, published in Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, and for his skill in drawing trees and figures.
He came to America in 1800, intending to settle in Western New York, but returned to England two years later. In his later years he did some lithographic work. He married Maria Siltso and had one child. In 1850, he died in Bushey Heath, England.
The Morgan Library in New York City has 266 drawings of Benjamin and Raphael West and a book of these drawings by Ruth S. Kraemer: Drawings of Benjamin WEst and His Son, Raphael Lamar West. The text of this book also mentions a Raphael West Sketchbook in the Rutgers University Library.
