This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following information was submitted by the artist's granddaughter, Minna Taylor, "I am one of two granddaughters of Ruskin Williams and I know something about his life."
Ruskin "Russ" Williams was born in what is now Washington State (unsure of exact dates of his birth and death), but may have been a territory at the time. He worked as a lumberjack in Washington during the summers so that he could pay to attend the Chicago Art Institute.
He married Vivian SoRelle, also of Washington, and they had one daughter, born Dorothy Anne Williams, but who went by Anne most of her life. Their daughter was born in 1917. In approximately 1920, the family moved to Paris, France and remained there until the Depression. At some point in the 20's, or shortly after they returned to the U.S., Ruskin and Vivian were divorced. On return to the United States, Ruskin lived in Woodstock, N.Y. and later other places. At his death, in the 1960's, he was living on one of the keys in Florida. Ruskin was not his given name at birth, but he adopted it later because he so admired John Ruskin. His given name was Robert. "He painted the commercial art you are displaying to make a living, but also painted landscapes. My mother, who was also an artist, learned to paint from him. She was a watercolorists, but I do not know in what medium my grandfather worked primarily."
