Samuel H. Wainwright Jr. was born in Kobe, Japan on May 29, 1893 of missionary parents.  At age six Wainwright began his art studies in Japan and then studied at Washington University in St Louis, Columbia University, and the New York School of Fine & Applied Art.  In California he lived in Palo Alto in the 1920s and later in Carmel and Berkeley.  An interim was spent in Bermuda and on the East Coast where he painted views of Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, and the Maine coast.  His last three years were spent in Casper, WY where he died on Sept. 14, 1969.  His work includes portraits and landscapes in oil and pastel.
