Born in either Baltimore, Maryland or Lowell, Massachusetts (see below), Sarah Whitman was a painter of flower paintings, portraits, and landscapes. In the 1890s, she focused on stained glass. She also became one of the most important book designers of her day, credited with revolutionizing book design.
In 1877, she studied in France with Thomas Couture at the Villiers-le-Bel and also studied with William Morris Hunt about whom she wrote a tribute in 1879 in "International Review." She traveled to England and France in the 1890s, meeting with James Whistler, and again in the early 1900s.
From 1877 to 1891, she was active in Boston and exhibited widely including at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.

"Who Was Who" by Peter Falk states she was born in Baltimore, but two references, "The Bostonians: Painters of an Elegant Age, 1870-1930" (Fairbrother, 1986) and "A Studio of Her Own, Women Artists in Boston, 1870-1940" (Hirshler, 2001), list her as being born in Lowell, MA in 1842, moving to Baltimore by 1845, and back in Lowell by 1853. |
