This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Maine on Jan. 31, 1834. Woodman was raised in poverty and worked on a farm for his board. When he was 14 he left the confines of the farm and went to sea. He sailed to Europe, the West Indies, and was shipwrecked on the coast of Labrador. He then boated on the Delaware and Hudson Rivers, ran a sloop on the North River, and worked as a stevedore on the NYC docks. He had little opportunity for education yet managed to read law and was admitted to the New York bar. After practicing law for two years in Rochester, he studied art in Chicago and made two trips to Europe for further art study. While in Paris, he was a pupil of Thomas Couture. Leaving Chicago in 1871, he divided the next twelve years between the family home in Topeka, KS and San Francisco. He was a resident of Portland, OR in 1905. By 1916 Woodman had returned to the San Francisco Bay area; he died in Oakland on April 21, 1923. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1875-79. In: CHS; Bidwell Mansion (Chico, CA); Oregon and Kansas Historical Societies; CHS.
