This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Earlville, IL on March 8, 1894. At age two Willard moved to Corona, CA with his parents. When he was 16 he was given his first camera and began traveling to the nearby mountains and deserts. In 1922 he moved to Palm Springs and then traveled great distances, by car and burro, in search of the perfect locations in which to capture the beauty of the area. His last 20 years were spent in Owens Valley, CA. Exhibitions of his hand-painted photographs were held at the Desert Inn Gallery and Palm Springs Desert Museum before his death on Jan. 10, 1966.

Biography from Palm Springs Art Museum:
Born in Earlville, Illinois in 1894, Stephen Willard moved with his parents two years later to Corona, California. In 1922 Willard and his wife, Beatrice, moved to Palm Springs from Los Angeles.

In 1935 Willard had his own studio built on South Palm Canyon Drive. He remained in Palm Springs until1947. Discouraged by the increasing development in the Coachella
Valley and the loss of his favorite photographic haunts, he moved to Owens Valley in the Great basin desert where he died in 1965.
