| | Born in Alvin, TX on June 14, 1903. A self-taught artist, Velma Hood began painting in 1919. In 1928 she moved to Los Angeles and worked as a secretary while painting in her leisure. Ill with tuberculosis, from 1932 until 1940 she was in a sanitarium in Oklahoma. Returning to California in search of a desert climate, she moved to Bakersfield and worked for Standard Oil Company. In 1947 she married Wm Whitmer and settled in New Cuyama, CA where she remained until her demise on March 4, 1977. Exh: Kern Co.
