| | Born in Benkelman, NE on June 18, 1893. At age three West began drawing horses on the family farm. He and his family joined the Oklahoma land rush in 1902 and, after six years, settled in Modesto, CA where his father established the J. S. West Company. His only art training was at the CSFA under Frank Van Sloun. A trip to the rodeo in Sonora, CA in 1935 convinced him to relocate there. After establishing a branch of the family firm there, he lived there until his death on July 27, 1955. His work includes wild west genre, cowboys and Indians. Exh: McHenry Museum (Modesto), 1992.
