| Born in Baltimore, MD on Dec. 5, 1823. Winder studied medicine in Washington, DC and then enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. He arrived in San Diego in 1854 and while stationed at the mission ordered the exploration and mapping of the lower Colorado River. In 1857 the Army sent him to San Francisco and during the Civil War he was in charge of the Third Artillery Regiment on Alacatraz Island. After resigning his commission in 1866, he soon returned to San Diego where he establi (showing 500 of 898 characters). |
