From England, William J. Weaver became an itinerant portrait artist in
America after having a career as a copyist in London for the
Polygraphic Society from 1784-1792. He tried to sell his copies
in America but did not succeed, so he turned to itinerant portrait
painting, which he did along the Eastern seaboard from Nova Scotia to
New Bedford, Massachusetts to Charleston, South Carolina. He also
went up the Hudson River to Ontario, likely to Kingston.
