| From England, William Ward was a sculptor and architect who spent time in Utah where he used the native stone for carvings for the Washington Monument in Washington DC. He also carved a lion for the home of Brigham Young, Mormon church leader, and served as assistant architect on the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City.
He was briefly in St. Louis, but returned to Salt Lake City in 1892 to teach drawing at the University of Utah.
