This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted August 2002, is from Frank Wright, Artist and Professor of Drawing and Graphics, The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

William Woodward is a well-known Washington realist painter who was also Professor of Painting at The George Washington University.

Woodward attended The American University where he received his BA and MA degrees. He was awarded a Leopold Schepp Foundation fellowship for European study. Subsequent to his return to America, he taught painting at the Corcoran School of Art. He has been teaching at GWU since 1969.

Woodward has had many solo exhibitions including those in Washington DC at the Mickleson Gallery and The Fendrick Gallery; a retrospective at the Washington County Museum of Fine Art, Maryland; and the Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York.

Woodward is a noted muralist whose work is at the Rockville City Hall, Rockville, Maryland; Clydes Inc. at Tyson's Corner, Virginia; and a 22 x 42 foot mural for the corporate headquarters of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus in Tyson's Corner, Virginia. Recently he completed a 22 x 88 foot mural frieze for the Leesburg, Virginia Public Library on the history of Virginia. His large mural on the history of medicine is in the Fairfax NOVA Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia.

Woodward won the Bicentennial of the Congress Design Competition in 1989 leading to the 1989 silver dollar and the reverse of the 1989 half-dollar celebrating the Bicentennial of Congress.

Woodward's paintings are in such public collections as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Speed Museum, and the United States Army Museum.

Note submitted July 2004 by John Grazier:

Bill Woodward has retired from teaching at George Washington University, and
lives in a small town in Northern Virginia. Bill is a really personable guy,
who was my first painting teacher.

Biography from Marin-Price Galleries:
William Woodward is well known for representational work (mostly European scenes) and for his murals. Most people don't know however, that when he finished art school at American University, his first passion was abstraction.  William is again painting abstracts.

William Woodward, former professor at George Washington University, is well know for his representational work, and his large murals which can be found in major institutions in the Washington Metropolitan Area such as Monticello, The Lincoln Cabin, the James Madison's Home and many other places.

However, when Woodward graduated from American University, where he studied with Robert D'Arista, his first passion was Abstract Expressionism.  Woodward has returned to that genre (but also continues to paint his representational work) and "we are happy to report that his abstract expressionism work is magnificent."
