| Born in Csokonya, Hungary on Oct. 5, 1825. While a law student, Xántus became involved in the ill-fated Rebellion of 1848. After decamping to the U.S. in 1851, he became a topographer with the Pacific Railroad Survey in 1852. During 1855-57 he served with the U.S. Coast Survey and was stationed at Fort Tejon and Cape St Lucas. While in California, he contributed greatly to the study of western birds which resulted in several new species being named for him. He published and illustrated (showing 500 of 1014 characters). |
