This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Havre-de-Grace, Maryland, he was a portraitist who also did genre subjects.
He received his early formal training at the National Academy of Design from 1851 to 1856 and then travelled to Paris where he studied with Thomas Couture for a short time before going to Rome. In 1878, he returned to the United States and settled in New York City for the rest of his career. |
