Biography from Hauk Fine Arts:
Joseph Yang was born on Christmas Day, 1928, in Manchuria. He began painting as a youth and as a boy witnessed the Japanese inivasion of China and the civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists. His family - the House of Yang - was scattered by the turmoil, and he walked out of the country beginning on a May morning in 1947. His epic 2000-mile journey would eventually inspire the acclaimed 1994 book ``Baba: A Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders,'' by his daughter, Belle Yang, and the sequel two years later, ``The Odyssey of a Manchurian.''

``It was a disaster,'' Yang told the Monterey County Herald in 1991. ``My family was like a big tree that couldn't stand the storm and fell. In a year and a half the whole family was ruined.''

In Taiwan Yang met his wife Laning. He earned his M.A. in Chinese history and international relations in 1966 at Meiji University, Japan, and in 1967 the Yangs, with their daughter Belle, arrived in San Francisco. In 1971 the family settled on the Monterey Peninsula, in Carmel, California, and there Joseph Yang, inspired by the fog shrouded-Santa Lucia Mountains, which reminded him of China, began to paint again. For a period he had his own art gallery in Carmel. His preferred medium is watercolor.

Artistic influences include Chinese landscape artists of the 8th through 10th centuries such as Wang Wei, known for the spontaneity of his brushstrokes, and Li Sixun, who specialized in detailed drawings. Yang's painting are known for their serene, quiet quality. He is also a wire sculptor, creating images of animals and landscapes, and he has written more than 700 poems.

His art work is held by the Monterey Museum of Art and he has exhibited at the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz, the Carmel Foundation, and at Porter College, the University of California, Santa Cruz.
