Julian Yates was active in Nantucket from 1935-53. Yates was a chaplain in the United States Army and in 1935, he retired to Nantucket and lived and worked at 27 India Street.
His work comprises careful and realistic representations of island houses, streets, and genre scenes. Yates' work differs markedly from that of other prominent Nantucket painters of this era in that it is very tight, precise and outlined.
