This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following is from Nola Towgood, relative of the artist who is researching the family genealogy:
Mary Young-Hunter (nee Towgood) was born in Napier, New Zealand in 1872. She died at Monterey, California, USA in 1947. Mary was the second child of Edward and Edith Towgood. Edward, born in Wales, was a sheep farmer at Napier, and he was the son of Stephen Towgood, owner of Towgood's private bank in High Street, Cardiff, Wales. His grandfather and great-grandfather were also bankers in London, Bristol and Cardiff. His great great grandfather was well known (Rev) Micaiah Towgood. Edward died in 1882, and Edith took her four daughters including Mary to live in England.
Mary married John Young-Hunter at Kensington, London in 1899. They had a daughter Gabrielle but do not know if there was any further family. John and Mary divorced and he remarried a woman named Eve. As Mary died at Monterey, Cal., perhaps that is where her daughter lived. ---------------------------------------------------------------------Known primarily for portraits, Mary Towgood Young-Hunter was born in New Zealand and sailed to England with her family. She was educated there at the Royal Academy in London and also in Italy. She married artist John Young-Hunter and with him, worked as a portraitist in Scotland and England, where subjects included royalty.
In 1914, the couple came to the United States and lived in New York City and then in Taos, New Mexico. In 1921, she moved to Berkeley, California and shortly after built a home in Carmel, where she died on September 8, 1947.
