This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Maurice Yochim, art professor emeritus at Northeastern Illinois University, died July 30 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. He was 78. The Ukrainian-born artist came to Chicago in 1913 at the age of 5. He moved to Skokie in 1958. Mr. Yochim was professor at the university when it was known as Chicago Teacher's College North.
He studied at and later exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, and also he exhibited at the Chicago Non-Juried Society of Artists.

In addition to his teaching, Mr. Yochim was director of art for the Board of Jewish Education and director of Fisher Hall Todros-Geller Art Galleries.

Until the 1920s, Jewish prominence in the arts in Chicago was predominantly in the performing arts. Talented young painters and sculptors were emerging and, in 1928 a number of them founded the organization "Around the Palette." They held their first annual exhibit in December 1931 at the College of Jewish Studies (now the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies). The group ultimately disbanded in 1939, and was succeeded a year later by the American Jewish Arts Club. The club's first president was Todros Geller, a prolific artist with special expertise on Jewish religious art. He taught at the Jewish People's Institute (JPI) and was supervisor of art for the Board of Jewish Education and director of art for the College of Jewish Studies. Geller was followed in these posts by Maurice Yochim and Victor Perlmutter. The Arts Club later became the American Jewish Artists Club.

Yochim also was a published author, co-authoring "Arts and Crafts in the Jewish Schools" with the late artist Samuel Greenberg in 1952. The text is still in use.
