This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Yotoku Miyagi was born in Japan on February 10, 1903.  Miyagi immigrated to California from Okinawa with his parents when quite young.  He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute until 1923.  He then moved to southern California where his father was farming in the Imperial Valley.  He continued his art education at the San Diego School of Fine Art and in Los Angeles at the Art Students League where he was a pupil of Macdonald-Wright.  While operating the Owl Restaurant in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, he began to paint and soon was selling enough to support himself.  He became involved with the Communist Party and, abandoning his wife and all possessions, returned to Tokyo in 1933.  Accused of spying for the Russians, he was arrested by the Japanese police in 1941.  He died in prison of consumption and ill treatment on Aug. 2, 1945 just as the Japanese Empire was collapsing.
