Spending his childhood in Madison, Wisconsin, he became a painter of California harbor scenes and landscapes, especially of the Napa Valley wine country.

At age 17, he moved to California and took a job in the aerospace industry and then began a successful career as an architectural and freelance illustrator after studying fine art and graphic art at the University of California in Los Angeles. In the mid-1970s, he started painting on his own and for 15 years marketed his paintings out of (showing 500 of 2422 characters).
