This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted May 2005, is from Greg Young, son of the artist.

For over 70 years, Webb Young has studied and painted the New Mexico landscape, architecture, and people, capturing as perhaps few others have the flavor and beauty of old New Mexico. Forays into northern Arizona have also yielded some beautiful renditions of Navajo life and the Grand Canyon.

Young was born in Covington, Kentucky on September 2, 1913. He grew up in Winnetka, a suburb on the lake near Chicago, Illinois, where his father was in the advertising business. His mother was a concert pianist. Webb Young had two older brothers: Jim, a writer and teacher, and Dick, an airline pilot. Both have passed away.

Widely known as "Painter of the New Mexico Scene," Webb Young had an interest in painting that began at age 11 with art classes at the Chicago Art Institute. From 1925 through 1928, he was in New Mexico studying painting under the famous Southwestern painter, Gerald Cassidy. In 1927, Young attended a session in Vienna under art teacher Cezik. More training sessions at Chicago Art Institute in 1933 and 1934, refresher courses with the Famous Artists School in the early 50's, and study at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in the mid 60's rounded out his extensive training.

Webb Young traveled extensively to Europe as a child and went with the family on a seven month, around the world tour while a teenager. In 1928, the family bought a ranch in New Mexico near the Cochiti Indian Pueblo. The ranch became their summer home for many years. Young did lots of horseback riding and enjoyed the outdoors. At this ranch, Rancho de la Cañada, James Webb Young, Webb's father, eventually developed a large apple orchard. Jim pioneered the selling of crates of apples by mail order, under the trademark Old Jim Young's Mountain Grown Apples.
Webb's mother died in 1950 of cancer. Webb Young's father donated the entire ranch to the University of New Mexico in 1965, and died in 1973 at the age of 86.

Webb Young died on February 12, 2005 in Denver, Colorado.
