Biography from Greenleaf Gallery:
I was born in an internment camp for Japanese Americans at Manzanar, California in 1943. When we were released from incarceration after the war, my disheartened parents, grandparents, and other relatives decided to live in Japan. I was three years old whe we arrived on a small island called Etajima, off the shore of Hiroshima. There I attended kindergarten, elementary school, and a few years of junior high.

My family came back to America in 1957, when I was fourteen years old. We moved to Fresno where, because I only spoke Japanese, I was remanded to second grade, although in Japan I had been reading great literature and studying art and science in junior high school.

I still recall hours spent sitting in the room while the teacher taught my classmates how to tell time. Of course I quickly learned English and moved into and finished high school.

After that, my love for art led me to the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. I had the best time at the CCAC, mostly because it was there that I confirmed that my love and passion is best expressed in my art. After all these years, that is still the core truth in my life.
