This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The work of Alex Zapata has definite classical tendencies. He is inspired by works from throughout art history and uses a variety of techniques necessary to accomplish his artistic goals. For example, in one work the subject's face is classically painted, the halo around it is more like Russian Icon art and the background has a "Pop" feeling to it. He finishes his canvases with hand made frames making his final works holistic ones.

Zapata earned his BA degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City in 1992 where his mentor was Mr. James McMullen, SVA's Chief Life Drawing instructor and New York City's Lincoln Center Master Poster Artist. Zapata became McMullen's Life Drawing assistant at SVA. Several of his early works are included in McMullen's book "High Focus Drawing" published by Overlook Press. Zapata's grandfather (see AskArt Germain G Glidden) taught him many of the old master techniques such as the technique of underpainting. Zapata's favorite old masters are Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Today, his favorite artist is Lucien Freud.

Alex Zapata, a Bolivian/American artist, was born in New York City on May 19, 1966. After his studies at the United Nations School in New York City and the School of Visual Arts, he moved to Bolivia in 1993 and quickly became recognized not only in Bolivia but also in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, UK and more recently in Charleston, South Carolina. Zapata is married to Andrea Ruck. They have 2 sons.

At an early age Zapata demonstrated his love of art and dedication to the world of creativity. His 8th grade art teacher was very impressed with his talents and said he "did not have to study color, it was instinctive to him". As a teen, he was well known amongst the graffiti subculture artists in New York City. Of further interest, Zapata's great great Grandfather, great grandmother and grandfather (see AskART- Germain Glidden) were all respected artists in their days. Zapata often assisted his grandfather with his canvases in his later years including works that are now part of the collection of The National Art Museum of Sports in Indianapolis, Indiana.
