This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following is submitted by the artist, December 2003:

Julie Zickefoose is primarily known for realistic paintings of birds, eighteen of which had appeared on the cover of "Bird Watcher's Digest" by 2003. She began working as a freelance illustrator in 1980, upon graduating from Harvard University. There, drawing courses taught by William Reimann provided a foundation for seeing and interpreting living things into line.

As a painter, Zickefoose is self-taught, and looking hard at the works of Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Robert Verity Clem, and Lars Jonsson has provided inspiration and information. It was Clem who first suggested to her that she draw birds from life, and hundreds of sketchbooks later, she is still pursuing the elusive poses and gestures of wild birds.

Julie Zickefoose has made her living primarily as an illustrator of books and magazines about birds. She began writing seriously around 1990, and has provided more than 35 articles to "Bird Watcher's Digest", many of which detail her field experiences with wild birds, and go on to interpret and place those experiences in a larger ecological and spiritual context.

She lives with her husband, William Thompson III, Editor of "Bird Watcher's Digest", and two children on their 80-acre Appalachian sanctuary in southeast Ohio.
