A Kiowa Indian, he was an active warrior before 1875, part of a scalping of a white man i 1874 on Signal Mountain in Indian Territory. In 1875, he and others surrendered and was sent to Fort Marion, Florida, where he changed lifestyles and took up painting scenes of Indian life.
In 1878, he went to New York State and took art training at Utica and became an episcopalian and acquired sponsorship to study for the ministry. In June 1881, he was ordained and was then sent to India (showing 500 of 922 characters). |
