|  A well-known painter and illustrator of battle scenes of Army and Navy life, Rufus Zogbaum created depictions of military exercises that were widely published in magazines in the late 19th Century. His Civil War mural, the First Minnesota Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg," was created for the state capitol building in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the leading artist/ correspondent of the Spanish American War.
His reputation for depicting skirmishing cowboys preceded that of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, and he is credited with "setting the pattern for those who would follow" (Robert Taft).
Zogbaum was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and as a young man, studied at the Art Students League in New York from 1878 to 1879, and in 1880 at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Leon Bonnat.
In 1884, he traveled to Montana to gather data for paintings of military life on the frontier, and in this capacity. He also worked as a correspondent for "Harper's Weekly" while traveling the Oklahoma Indian territory. | |

A well-known painter and illustrator of Army and Navy life, Rufus Zogbaum did depictions of military exercises that were widely published in magazines in the late 19th Century. His reputation for depicting cowboys preceded that of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, and he is credited with "setting the pattern for those who would follow" (RobertTaft).
He was the leading artist/correspondent of the Spanish American War. Zogbaum was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and as a young man, studied at the Art Students League in New York from 1878 to 1879, and in 1880 at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Leon Bonnat. In 1884, he traveled to Montana to gather data for paintings of military life on the frontier, and in this capacity. He also worked as a correspondent for Harper's Weekly while traveling the Oklahoma Indian territory.
During his career as an artist Zogbaum exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, 1877, 1884; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1879,1883; Boston Arts Club (1888, 1893, 1902); National Academy of Design(1889); Columbian Exposition, Chicago (1893 medal); and the Art Institute of Chicago.
The art of Rufus Zogbaum is included in the following public collections: State capitol, St. Paul, MN; Federal Building, Cleveland, OH; Woolworth Building, New York City; Naval War College, Newport.

| Born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of a manufacturer of musical instruments, Rufus Fairchild Zogbaum grew up in New York City. He studied at the Art Students League, then with Leon Bonnat in Paris. Influenced by the French artists Detaille and De Neuville, he specialized in American war illustrations: the Civil War, skirmishes with the Indians, and the Spanish-American War.
In 1884, Zogbaum traveled to Montana to sketch military life on the frontier. The result of this and later trips to Montana, as well as an 1888 tour in Oklahoma was a series of illustrations for articles in Harper’s Weekly, and in books including his own Horse, Foot and Dragoons, Ships and Sailors and All Hands. In the 1890s Zogbaum concentrated on naval and military subjects, such as Seige at Vicksburg, a dramatic interpretation of one of the major battles of the Civil War. NRS
