Edna Zyl Modie was born on April 14, 1886, at Willow Creek, San Benito County, California, to Charles C. and Lillian Janette “Nettie” (Harvey) Modie. In 1887, the family (her parents and her older sister Ethel) moved from Walnut Creek and spent the next few years living in various locales in Southern California before taking up residency in Los Angeles around 1891. Edna graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1904 and then enrolled at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design, from which she graduated in 1907.
