Born in Fincastle, VA on Dec. 26, 1821. Eliza Griffin grew up in Louisville, KY and in 1843 married Albert Sidney Johnston. The couple then moved to Texas and led a peripatetic life while following military assignments. Her husband died a general in the Civil War, and the widow then lived in California from the early 1860s. Her time was divided between San Francisco and Los Angeles until her demise in the latter on Sept. 25, 1896.
