Biography Harry Barnitz
Harry W. Barnitz was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and studied under the renowned American Realist painter, Thomas Eakins. Eakins, who painted a portrait of Barnitz when he was just nineteen, complimented his young student in a letter from 1884, “[y]ou draw and paint very well and extremely well for your age. I know no one who has a better start.”
In 1887, he moved to Atlanta for a brief period and taught at the Atlanta Art School as well as the Washington Seminary for Girls. He also shared a studio with Henry Ossawa Tanner, a fellow student from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
