Little is known about the career of J. Ernest Galvan (sometimes Galvin). He was born around 1838 and died around 1915 and seems to have spent most of his career in Philadelphia. By the mid-1860s, he was working in Philadelphia, and had an address of 524 Walnut Street. In 1869, he did illustrations for Harper's Weekly magazine.
He exhibited in the Annual Exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1865, 1867, and 1868. The artist also exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1875 and 1881. Galvan exhibited a painting at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
