Portrait, genre, and history painter, Thomas Truman Spear pursued a career in the arts that drew upon his diverse in painting, musical composition, and business. A native of Massachusetts, from the 1830s to the 1850s,
he periodically traveled between Boston and Charleston, South Carolina, where he spent the winter months painting portraits and securing revenues from single-picture exhibitions that featured his copies of a George Washington portrait after Gilbert Stuart and of Washington Allston's unfinished Bellshazzar's Feast.
