Annie Christine Belle McPhail was born in Cambridge, MA on Oct. 19, 1898. McPhail settled in Los Angeles with her family in 1902. She received her teaching credentials from UCLA in 1925 and for 40 years taught at that school.
In 1931-33, on leave from UCLA, she headed the art department at the University of Hawaii and one summer taught at the Arizona State University. Upon retirement in 1966, she moved north to San Mateo near the home of her sister where she remained until her demise on Aug. 24, 1985.
