James Elmer Buck was born in Kentucky on April 8, 1906. Buck was in San Francisco in 1930 and soon moved south to Hollywood. He began his career painting posters for the movie studios and portraits of stars including Charles Laughton.
Buck spent his last years in Capitola, CA. He was active with the Santa Cruz Art League in whose shows he won many prizes for his canvases. He lived there until his demise on Nov. 7, 1982. As well as portraits, he also painted a few still lifes.
