Painter, printmaker, and educator, Ada Caldwell was skilled as a landscape, still life, and portrait painter. Also she was a highly credentialed and beloved teacher from 1899 to 1936 in Brookings, South Dakota at South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now South Dakota State University). She began her career there as a teacher of Industrial Arts, and then founded and served as Chair of the Art Department until retirement. She was described as having had a “tremendous impact on her students.” (Kovinick 38)
