Growing up in Chicago, Annie Shaw, painter, etcher and art teacher, became in 1874 at age 22, the first woman to open an art studio in Chicago. She showed early art talent indicated by her winning an
award for pencil drawing at age twelve. From 1868 to 1872, she
studied with Henry Chapman Ford, and two years later opened her studio.
She traveled throughout the country, doing
plein-aire painting, and also established a reputation for excellent
teaching at the Chicago Academy of Design, predecessor of the Art
Institute. In 1876, Shaw was elected to full membership of the
Academy, the first women to achieve that distinction. It is
