Biography Anton Petter
The historic painter, Anton Petter was born in Mariahilf outside of Vienna. He was a pupil of the Viennese Academy and went to Rome in 1808. He was a professor since 1823 and director of the painting and sculpting school of the Vienna Academy since 1829.
Examples of his works are the Classicist high altarpiece (Madonna with Child and Angels, 1826) in the Hofkirche in Baden close to Vienna as well as the altarpieces in the Dom zu Olmütz in the Pfarrkirche of Kremsier. The Joanneum in Graz holds the paintings ‘Meeting og Emperor Maximilian with his bride in Gent’, ‘Sigismund and Genovefa’ and ‘Kunz von der Rosen tries to free Maximilian’. (tm)
