Arthur Monroe, July 15, 1935 – October 30, 2019
It is with great sadness to share that, my father, Oakland based artist, activist and chief registrar of the Oakland Museum, Arthur Monroe had left us on October 30th 2019.
Arthur Monroe was part of the abstract expressionist art scene of 1950s in the Bay Area, where he communed after serving in the Korean War, with the Beat Generation of writers, musicians, poets, and painters in North Beach and dear friend to art collector, Dr. Reidar Wennesland, whom has the largest collection of Beat Generation Art outside of the United States. Arthur was the only prominent African American artist in the collection that is now housed in Oslo and Christensen Norway.
