A long-time Nebraska art teacher and artist, Bette Sandbourne lived in Omaha where she arrived in 1937 from Iowa. There she had been an art teacher in Newton and in her home town of Cedar Rapids. In Omaha, from 1938 to 1945, she was a traveling teacher at Windsor, Sherman and Hawthorne grade schools and was a substitute teacher at Monroe Junior High. From 1953 to 1970, she was head of the art department at Omaha Technical High School.

In addition to teaching art, she took private lessons in Omaha from realist-impressionist painter, Augustus Dunbier, (1888-1977)
